Welcome to my blog. Here you will find whatever is bringing me joy right now. Please join me in this spiritual agreement, from my mentor and friend, Jana Massey: "Together we agree that everything that we think, that we say and that we do at this time will be of the highest good. And together we ask for truth, the understanding of that truth and the wisdom to use it in our lives." Thank you.

"House Too Hot"- Calming Inflammation In Our Bodies
Before she retired, my all time favorite acupuncturist used to sometimes say to me, "Josephine, House too hot!" What she meant by this is that inflammation was running high in my body. And I've heard it said that inflammation is at the root cause of all of our diseases. When a house is too hot for too long, it can be in danger of catching fire.
Inflammation is a natural body response and generally it is a good thing. It is our way of protecting ourselves against injury or infection. Our immune system kicks into high gear and floods the area of concern with white blood cells to help heal whatever has gone wrong. But when inflammation gets out of control, as it can when our blood sugar levels are consistently higher than normal, it can become a real problem.
As we round the bend into older age, it is especially important to keep inflammation down in the body. This is because recent journals of medicine have cited continual high blood glucose levels as being a primary cause behind Alzheimer's disease, gradually causing our brains to loose their good function. Having our C-reactive protein levels tested in our blood is a good way for us to keep track of our inflammation levels, so that we know whether they are getting too high or not.
Many health care professionals feel that cardio vascular disease, swollen or painful joints, skin rashes, increased fatigue and even cancer can be the result of chronically high levels of inflammation. My mother used to say that cancer was the result of any constant irritation in the body. And we know that constant irritations can cause hot spots.
So, what to do about it? Cooling herbs and well placed acupuncture needles can certainly help. But I, along with many others, find that watching our diet is the surest way to quickly cool our systems down. This is because a diet high in carbohydrates contributes mightily to rising levels of inflammation.
In general, I find that fruits are wonderfully wholesome and good foods to eat. The same is true for whole grains and carbohydrate-rich vegetables like potatoes, yams, beets, beans, winter squash, turnips and rutabagas. We need carbohydrates in our diets. They give our endocrine system the energy needed for quick bursts of movement and exertion when hormones like adrenaline come into play. Diets rich in healthy carbohydrates can be wonderful if inflammation is not a problem. But if there are rising levels of C-reactive proteins causing conditions like itchy skin or cranky joints, a carbohydrate-rich diet will contribute to higher blood sugar levels and can be like tossing kindling onto to those flames.
So, when I really need to cool my internal chemistry down fast, I go on a green juice feast. In such a scenario, I'll often drink two pints or more of fresh raw organic green juice a day. The fuice from cucumbers, celery, zucchini, kale and collards along with a few herbs like parsley or cilantro will not only cleanse and cool my body, but they also pump my tissues full of good nutrition, rich in vitamins and minerals.
Bieler Broth is another beautiful way to cool down inflammation. This is a soup that was recommended by Henry G. Bieler, M.D. back in the 1950's, in his book, Food Is Your Best Medicine. He used it for helping diabetics to stabilize their blood sugars. It is made from equal parts of fresh organic zucchini, parsley leaves, celery and green beans. To make it, you cover the vegetables with water, cook them until they are soft, cool it all down and blend it. It can be stored in glass jars in the refrigerator for up to four days. It is nice taken either warm or cold. Having just Bieler Broth and good clean water for a few days, while mostly resting, can cool down many a house that has become too hot.
Another strategy that helps to lower inflammation is exercise. Burning lots of calories helps us to use up all those carbohydrate fuels before they start to smolder. A healthy lifestyle of consciously chosen foods and lots of exercise can be the golden road to keeping inflammation levels low in our bodies while giving us plenty of steady energy to burn all day long.

Oh Those Bitter, Not So Sweet, Sugar Blues
Yep! It happened again. I got into the sugar. It started off with helping a friend make a maple syrup sweetened, gluten-free, almond-meal based, lemon wedding cake for her son. The cake was amazing, light and lovely and so was the frosting, a white chocolate ganache. It was also made with very clean and pure ingredients, organic cream with fair trade, white chocolate, organic chips. Ah, but therein lay my downfall. The chips were sweetened with organic, yet still refined sugar.
It took us two days to make the cake, working steadily. And it was a masterpiece with white chocolate peony petals and beautiful pink and white fresh roses. But alas, tastes of the ganache awakened the sleeping sugar monster within me. The days that followed had little bits of sugar here and there, not too much, but soon the cravings reached a crescendo in all three of that day's meals containing sugar. Then the following morning, along came the blues.
When our bodies are healthy and well nourished we handle stress better and roll with the punches when they come. But when we are depleted, which sugar does to most of us, with it's destruction of our gut flora and subsequent inadequate nutrition, along with the emotional swings from high to low, then we really feel the blows.
It is not just our emotional health that suffers, we can loose our physical stability as well. Aches and pains and swellings set in. Flare ups of inflammation attack our joints and pretty soon we hurt all over. Add a little refined wheat flour or alcohol into the mix and you've got a recipe for sleepless nights and dreary days feeling tired, run down and generally awful.
Blessedly, I don't fall into this hole very often anymore. And when I do I can usually pull myself out with the help of probiotics from eating sauerkraut and kimchi. These quickly restore my gut flora and put an end to that sweet tooth. But years ago my sugar downfalls used to happen with every holiday: Christmas and New Years in winter, Valentines and Easter in spring, the 4th in summer and Thanksgiving in fall. Top this off with Birthdays and other personal celebrations and Voila! we've got a series of swings, high and low, from cradle to grave.
For decades I would successfully quit and fall, quit and fall, quit and fall, year in and year out. I always felt fabulous when I quit, full of energy and joy, raring to go. Then I'd fall and get grumpy, sore and tired. You'd think I would have managed a clean break sooner. But we are talking about addiction here. Sugar is every bit as addictive as cocaine, and it similarly erodes our health.
In the U.K. they have begun to implement programs for curtailing sugar addiction and it's subsequent health damaging effects. Diabetes, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, arthritis, virtually all inflammatory diseases, along with depression can be mitigated and even reversed by eliminating the refined sugars from the diet and focusing on quality nutrition, fresh from the garden, instead.
Today, I'm just one day "dry." And my sometimes sore morning feet already feel a little bit better. May your spirits and health rise like mine as celebrate our freedom from junk foods and other addictions together.

Juice Feasting Through the Holidays
In pre-agricultural times, when we humans lived in small migratory bands, there would often be lean times as we would move from one place of abundance to another. These times of scarcity would occur periodically and often would grow more profound while in the depths of winter. It is felt by many, myself included, that these times of intermittent fasting and occasional longer times of fasting would allow our bodies to do a deep self cleaning.
Many of our contemporary health practitioners advocate the benefits of intermittent fasting or times of significantly reduced caloric intake for our health. And the benefits of longer term fasting regimes, like water fasting have long been known within a variety of spiritual communities for the ability to bring exceptional clarity and insight to the practitioner.
I have done extensive fasting in the past, both for reasons of health and for clarity, and have found these experiences to be most profound, leaving me with a feeling of being 'preternaturally clear.' However, in recent years, I have discovered juice fasting, or 'juice feasting,' as it is fondly called by those who have enjoyed it.
A common adage in natural healing advises that we rebuild while we detoxify. And this is what occurs while we juice feast. Here, the reduced caloric intake lets our bodies remove toxins while the large servings of fresh, raw, organic, vegetable juices flood our bodies with the nutrition needed for healthy metabolism and the rebuilding of damaged or worn out body tissues.
Frank and I have long enjoyed adding a pint of fresh, raw, organic, vegetable juices into our daily meal plans. We prefer the juice without the pulp because we can consume so much more nutrition that way: lots and lots of enzymes, minerals, flavonoids, vitamins, and other beneficial phyto-chemicals. The difference is between consuming the equivalent of two stalks of celery and one cucumber versus a whole bunch of celery and several cucumbers along with any number of other leafy greens, all of which would be impossible to eat in a single sitting. Plus the juice is loaded with soluble fiber, which is what our body really needs and we get plenty of other fibrous materials with which to sweep our colons clean in our other foods. So, most mornings, it is our fresh, raw, organic, vegetable juice that we enjoy for breakfast because it gives us such a great nutritional and energy packed start to our day.
This year as the onslaught of holiday foods began to loom ahead, we decided, in early November, to take a different tact in regards to holiday feasting. Instead of risking ill health and distended organs, we made the choice to do what nature has long encouraged us humans to do and began a time of reduced caloric intake. Only this time, in addition, we decided to add the benefit of health building nutrition with juice feasting.
I must tell you, it has been great. We are feeling fantastic. All of the little aches and pains and other signs of inflammation have simply melted away. And, please pardon me for boasting, but I must share that my vision, which has always been good, has progressed to crystal clear. I've been jokingly saying that I can see a mosquito on the arm of a hiker on the mountain, which isn't quite true, but it gives you an idea of the increased level of health that our time of juice feasting is blessing us with.
Of course our loved ones are missing us at the holiday feasts, but our doors are always open to them for a nice cup of herbal tea. And we are delighting in using this time of celebration for detoxification and the rebuilding of our beautiful health.
